The Mapuche are the original indigenous inhabitants of Chile and the poncho was an essential part of their wardrobe. Fearsome Mapuche warrior tribes first repelled Incan soldiers from south-central Chile a thousand years ago to preserve their unique communal-agrarian culture. Later in the 1500s, Mapuche warriors defeated the first Spanish conquistadores and thereafter remained an unconquered indigenous nation until the late 1800s, well into the first decades of Chilean independence. The Mapuche Poncho was inspired by these warriors.
